FIU College of Medicine signs affiliation agreement with Memorial Healthcare System

MIAMI –Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine announced today that it has signed an affiliation agreement with Memorial Healthcare System, expanding opportunities for its students while improving access to health care throughout South Florida.

The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, which oversees the operations for Memorial Healthcare System, unanimously approved the affiliation agreement on Wednesday, May 26. The Memorial Healthcare System, which has six hospitals, is the fifth-largest public healthcare system in the country.

Dr. John Rock, founding dean of FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, said the agreement with Memorial adds a new dimension to the affiliations FIU already has in place and fits well with the medical school’s vision.

“We are very excited to be affiliated with a Broward institution because it is our mission to increase the number of post-graduate programs in the state so our students can stay and practice medicine in South Florida,” Rock said. “Memorial Healthcare has outstanding clinical programs that will be greatly beneficial for teaching our medical students.”

The affiliation with Memorial will allow FIU medical students to receive clinical training from physicians in a variety of specialties, including obstetrics, family medicine, behavioral medicine and palliative care, among others.

“We are honored to be part of this affiliation,” said Dr. Stanley Marks, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Memorial Healthcare System. “Students will receive a combination of a well-rounded curriculum, as well as expert instruction by some of the best physicians in Florida. Their overall experience in this program will be invaluable.”

FIU’s other clinical partners include Baptist Health South Florida, Jackson Health Systems, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Children’s Hospital, Mercy Hospital, and Leon Medical Centers.
