Founding Faculty Fellow Bruce Hauptli passes Big Shoes to Fill to John Stuart

On Aug. 17 Bruce Hauptli’s tenure as Founding Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Provost came to an end.

“Bruce set a very high standard. He helped a great deal in enhancing the linkages between the faculty and my office,” said Provost Douglas Wartzok. “I am particularly grateful for his painstaking review of faculty credentials for our SACS reaffirmation of accreditation, which became a major undertaking during his time in the Office of the Provost.”

During an informal gathering in the Office of the Provost, Hauptli was recognized for his outstanding service. At the same time, John Stuart, professor of architecture and incoming Faculty Fellow for 2010-2012, was presented by the staff with a symbolic pair of big shoes (the sneakers are a whopping size 18 and were donated courtesy of the FIU Athletics Department) as a reminder of the high expectations for the second Faculty Fellow and the big shoes Hauptli left for Stuart to fill.

The Faculty Fellow is a two-year assignment to enhance the linkages between the Office of the Provost and the faculty. The appointment is not intended as a prelude to an administrative appointment, but rather provides an opportunity for faculty to understand more about academic administration and for the provost to be more attuned to the concerns and interests of the faculty.
Hauptli will return to serve on the faculty of the Department of Philosophy in the spring of 2011. For now, he has packed his bags to resume his interrupted sabbatical away from Miami and continue writing.
