Freshman Convocation welcomes Class of 2014

FIU officially welcomed the Class of 2014 during Freshman Convocation Sunday, Aug. 22, a day before the start of Fall classes. More than 2,000 freshmen packed the U.S. Century Bank Arena, celebrating the start of their college careers with their peers and their families.

The annual event is a formal welcoming of new students. From the colorful spectacle of the opening processional to heartfelt words of encouragement from university leaders, the event is meant to inspire and empower new students. A dramatic passing of the Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding with several incoming freshmen is a highlight of the event.

Prior to convocation, freshmen have already gone through orientation programs in which they learn about the university’s traditions and obtain other useful information. Freshman Convocation communicates to students their roles as people learning from others and as individuals contributing to the vitality of the university.

Remarks were delivered by university leaders and current students, who shared their experiences and urged the freshmen to avail themselves of the opportunities that come with an education at FIU.
