WHAT: Florida International University’s first Open Space Design Charrette will bring together members of the university community to discuss the future of four key locations on the Modesto A. Maidique campus. The charrette is intended to open a broad discussion regarding the creation of attractive, engaging areas that are conducive to the best educational experience, considering sustainability, vibrancy and health. The four areas to be discussed are the Graham Center Connector, or “Plaza Mayor,” the Steven and Dorothea Green Library Breezeway, or “The Tunnel,” the Deuxieme Maison Theater & Courtyard, or “X Space,” and the Residential Quadrangle, or “Living Room.”
The idea to re-imagine the open spaces came from a Community Leaders Summit called by Rosenberg last year, where more than one hundred community leaders gathered to discuss FIU’s future.
WHO: Students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community, are invited to attend the open discussion. The charrette will consist of four presentations by teams made up of students and faculty members from the College of Architecture + The Arts. Design firm AECOM has stepped up and offered their assistance, as well as agreed to be facilitators for this process. The architecture firm of Perkins and Will provided the master plan.
WHEN AND WHERE: Students will present their work on Thursday, September 2nd from 9 a.m. to noon in Graham Center room 243 on the Modesto A. Maidique campus, 11200 SW 8 Street in southwest Miami-Dade County. The charrettes began on Monday, August 31st with teams touring the sites.
