FIU College of Law to open no-cost clinic to help small investors who have been impacted by broker misconduct

FIU College of Law has received a $250,000 grant from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation to run an Investor Advocacy Clinic.

Through this clinic, FIU College of Law students will provide no-cost representation to individuals who have lost their investments as a result of misconduct or mistreatment by a broker.

“Our nation’s financial crisis has caused many individuals, often retirees, to lose their life savings; FIU is going to do its part to help these individuals,” said Troy Elder, interim director of Clinical Education.

FIU was among four law schools in the nation selected by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation to open such a clinic. Visiting Professor Robert Savage, who has almost two decades of experience with investor issues, has agreed to head this effort.

The clinic will give preference to clients who are elderly and live in South Florida and it will be able to work with potential clients whose first language is not English.
