FIYou: Patty Delgado

Name: Patty Delgado (I will graduate in 2012 with a master’s in human resource development.)

Hometown: Miami, Fla. I currently live in Pembroke Pines.

Job Title/Department: Coordinator, Budget & Human Resources, for both the Division of External Relations and the Division of University Advancement.

Campus: Modesto A. Maidique Campus

In a nutshell: I assist with the coordination of human resources and budgetary functions for both divisions. This includes an array of duties from assisting with the hiring and on-boarding of new employees to helping the departments stay on track with their budgets

Number of years at FIU: It will be three years next February.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Meeting new people and all the excitement that surrounds a college campus.

What do you think students and your fellow faculty/staff should know about your department?

I think everyone should know that both the Division of University Advancement and the Division of External Relations are filled with committed employees who are working toward and succeeding at making FIU the best it can be.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

It’s a toss-up. If I need to relax or work on homework for my classes, I like to go to the patio on the first floor of the MARC building. It overlooks the lake and is often a quiet getaway. If I don’t need to study or do work for class, I love going to GC. It is a great reminder of how dynamic and diverse this university really is.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU?

I wish everyone knew how much this university has to offer. There truly is something for everyone – young, old, fresh out of high school or even someone with 30 years of work experience. There is no limit to what FIU has to offer.

How is FIU “Worlds Ahead”?

When you come to FIU and you embrace everything that FIU has to offer, you receive a first-class education that you can take with you anywhere in the world. This is college, you aren’t going to be spoon fed. You’re going to learn how to stand on your own and how to find what moves you. FIU is here to help you find that and once you find it, FIU will prepare you take it around the globe.

Family snapshot:

I have a wonderful husband named Desi, who is a mechanical engineer, and we have two cats named Hercules and Lucy. My amazing parents, Helen and Gerry Doyle, live in South Miami and my sister, or “seeeeester” as we often refer to each other, is an attorney in Brickell.

Word that best describes you: Committed.

First paying job: Lupa Shoes in South Miami, although as I recall, they practically paid me in shoes. Most of my paychecks were spent on shoes.

Favorite TV show: Glee!

What is playing on your iPod?

A little bit of everything, but I must admit, I’m a big fan of country music.

Your proudest accomplishment:

I would have to say a stream of accomplishments: graduating from college, buying my first home with my husband and most recently, starting my master’s at FIU.

What do you do when you are not working at FIU?

Study. I spend a lot of my free time doing work for my master’s classes. When I’m not doing that, I spend as much time as I can with my husband, friends and family, mostly watching football or other sporting events.
