They’re off to their best conference start (2-0) in a decade after wins against University of Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) and Arkansas State last weekend, but just who are the women of FIU soccer?

In this continuing feature brought to you by FIU Athletics, this week’s videos feature defender Kelly Ann Hutchinson and midfielder/forward Paige Covington. (For a previous post introducing other soccer newcomers, click here.)

The FIU women’s soccer team (5-4-1, 2-0 SBC) is back in the NSCAA South Region rankings at No. 9. The Panthers cracked the polls Sept. 14 at No. 10 before falling out of the rankings due to the subsequent bye-week.

University of Florida tops the region poll with a record of 8-1-1 while conference foes Denver (8-2, 2-0) and North Texas (5-5-1, 0-2) claim the No. 3 and No. 10 spots, respectively.

The Panthers saw record-breaking performances last weekend in their wins over UALR and Arkansas State. Freshman Nicole DiPerna smashed the school record for fastest consecutive goals scored (19 seconds) against the Trojans while Katrina Rose‘s game-winning goal in double overtime against Arkansas State set the record for a goal scored with the least amount of time left in overtime (49 seconds).

FIU ranks among the top five percent in the nation for save percentage (0.883) at No. 17 and also sits at the No. 35 spot for goals-against average (0.662).

The Panthers hit the road for their first away games in conference play this weekend when they take on Troy Friday, Oct. 1, and South Alabama Sunday, Oct. 3.
