Men’s soccer travels north to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins

Sophomore Michael Mühseler scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a hungry Georgia State (2-0-2) team as FIU (2-2-0) fell, 3-2, Sept. 12 at the FIU Soccer Stadium.

“This is really a bad loss,” explained FIU Head Coach Munga Eketebi. “It’s a game we should have won. There really is no excuse. We have nobody to blame here but ourselves.”

In all, FIU and Georgia State combined for nine yellow cards, two of which were on FIU.

The two teams, both nicknamed Panthers, took a 0-0 tie into the half when the skies opened and delayed the match for over an hour with lightning in the area.

The delay didn’t faze the Panthers from Georgia State as they came out on fire when Eric Lawrence scored in the 48th minutes to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers from Miami responded with a vengeance as Mühseler scored on a penalty kick for his third goal of the season and his second PK in the last two matches. He wouldn’t be satisfied with just one goal on the afternoon. In the 78th minute, Mühseler took a pass from teammate Mario Uribe past GSU’s goalie, Vincent Foermer, to give FIU a 2-1 advantage.

Two minutes later, Lawrence would knot the game up at 2-2 for his second goal of the game. GSU would eventually score one more in the 86th minute of the match to take the lead for good and escape with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon.

Mühseler’s goal was his fourth of the season, which leads the team. Uribe’s assist was his first in 2010 and ties him with Diego Tamburus for the team lead.

The FIU men’s soccer team will travel to north to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins on Friday, Sept. 17 in Jacksonville, Fla. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
