U.S. Ambassador to Haiti to speak on reconstruction

MIAMI – As part of Florida International University’s long-term commitment to Haiti’s recovery, the University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), in conjunction with the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), the Division of External Relations, the FIU Hope for Haiti Task Force and the U.S. Department of State, is presenting a lecture by the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti, the Honorable Kenneth Merten. The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, September, 13, 2010, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the MARC Pavilion on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8th Street, Miami.

Merten will share his experiences on the ground during the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince on January 12 and will discuss the role of the U.S. government in the reconstruction of Haiti in the aftermath of the disaster.

Merten is a career member of the senior Foreign Service; he joined the diplomatic corps in 1987 and this is his third diplomatic assignment in Haiti. Most recently, Merten served as a Deputy Executive Secretary to U.S. Secretary of State Clinton and earlier to U.S. Secretary of State Rice. Merten’s other overseas assignments include the U.S. Embassy in Paris, the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels, and the U.S. Embassy in Bonn. Merten’s Washington experience includes two assignments in the State Department Operations Center, which supports the daily work and travel of the Secretary of State. He also has worked in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs and on the Cuba Desk, and worked for the Special Advisors on Haiti from 1993 to 1994.

The event is part of SIPA’s Ruth K. and Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series, which is generously supported by the Shepard Broad Foundation Inc. and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The lecture is free and open to the public but requires an RSVP.
