Dalai Lama to visit South Florida, celebrate world religions


MIAMI – During his upcoming trip to South Florida, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, will bring together leaders from several faiths to contemplate “The Significance of World Religions.”

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to give his lecture at 9:15 a.m. on Tues., Oct. 26, 2010 at Temple Emanu-El , located on South Beach. The event, sponsored by the Temple, Florida International University, Florida Memorial University and University of Miami, is by invitation only through one of the sponsoring organizations. While no tickets are available to the general public, the event will be broadcast live on the internet

Latin Grammy Award Winning flautist Nestor Torres will perform a short musical interlude dedicated to the Dalai Lama. Sharing the stage with the Buddhist Lama will be representatives of the Jewish faith, as well as the Catholic and Protestant churches, Islam, Hinduism, Jainism and Taoism.

“In hosting this interfaith event, His Holiness reminds us of the key role of tolerance and understanding in navigating the complicated times we live,” said FIU Professor of Religious Studies Nathan Katz, who is a personal friend of the Dalai Lama. “His message is one of unity and peace in the global community.”

Media wishing to cover the Dalai Lama lecture at Temple Emanu-El must secure credentials. The media credential form must be completed by Oct. 19, 2010. Only media that has met the deadline and has been cleared by the U.S. State Department Diplomatic Security Service will be admitted to the Temple, located at 1701 Washington Ave, Miami Beach.

After the lecture at Temple Emanu-El, the Dalai Lama will address the University of Miami community at 1:30 p.m. at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables. Media credentials for the Temple are different from credentials to cover the UM event. Media wishing to cover both events must apply for credentials to each separately.
