FIU Geopolitical Summit comes to a close, encourages discussion

The politics of environmental policy, the impact of health care reform and the global challenges of poverty were among the topics of discussion during FIU’s second Geopolitical Summit Oct 18-19.

Pictured here are U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg and former U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babitt at the Biscayne Bay Campus session this morning.

The 2010 summit provided an opportunity for the South Florida community to focus on poverty, health and sustainability in the context of globalization, and discuss what can or should be done to address these challenges.

The event also celebrated the establishment of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM), which welcomed its second class earlier this fall, and the establishment of the School of Environment and Society (SEAS). HWCOM and SEAS were joined in the summit by the School of International and Public Affairs, which initiated the first geopolitical summit last year.
