Name: David J. Park

Hometown: Whitewater, Wis.

Job Title/Department: Assistant Professor, School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Campus: Biscayne Bay Campus

In a nutshell: I teach in the Global Strategic Communications Graduate Program and my research focus is on new technology and media/cultural and information production.

Number of years at FIU: I am in my second year at FIU.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The students, my colleagues, the view of the bay from campus and the salty breeze from the ocean. Our graduate students are also from all over the world, which makes discussions about globalization processes very exciting.

What do you think students and your fellow faculty/staff should know about your department?

Our field is quite interdisciplinary, yet there is always a focus on the media. In general, the power of the media to shape public opinion should never be underestimated, nor should the importance of media literacy be placed on the back burner. Most people still don’t fully understand how the media work (or don’t work) in our democracy. Moreover, topics from every discipline eventually go through the media where economic and/or political interests can shape the content. People need to understand basic media literacy in order to function and be active participants in our democracy.

Where is your favorite spot on campus? Why?

The hallways to class – they’re where I can see the bay and feel the breeze.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about FIU?

It’s fun!

How is FIU “Worlds Ahead”?

FIU is a global institution. Our Global Strategic Communications Program is a good example of the university’s commitment to global issues. We are also fortunate to have high-quality faculty from around the world.
