FIU’s BBC Library to be named: Glenn Hubert Library

MIAMI — The library at the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus is getting a new name on Monday, Nov. 8th: it will be known as the Glenn Hubert Library.

Hubert, who grew up in a working-class family in Miami, worked throughout high school and college. He attended the University of Miami on scholarships and loans, and worked to cover the rest of the costs of his education, earning several degrees, including three Master’s degrees.

He dedicated his life to teaching, working at Miami Shores Elementary School for most of his career. He lived simply and invested wisely.

“FIU is a place where people come to transform their lives, and that’s what education did for me,” said Hubert. “I feel privileged to be able to contribute to the transformation of others’ lives.”

The library opened in 1988 and is one of two facilities of the University Libraries. With a staff of twenty-four, the library serves the academic programs at BBC and provides a wide range of services to FIU students face-to-face and virtually. In 2009 the library welcomed the Center for Excellence in Writing into the facility, as a partnership to provide more seamless support for students to hone their research and writing skills. The three-story library occupies the largest space in the building which also houses the Office of the Vice Provost, classrooms, and offices for the Division of IT, Human Resources, Public Safety, and Student Affairs.

Dean of Libraries Laura Probst said Hubert’s support comes at a critical time for the FIU libraries.

“Despite dramatic changes in technology, libraries continue to be as important to the learning process as they have ever been,” said Probst. “The endowment Mr. Hubert is creating will support learning and research innovation for generations.”

The dedication of the Glenn Hubert Library will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010 at the Biscayne Bay Campus, in northeast Miami-Dade.
