Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough to speak at FIU Nov. 19

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum will host a talk by Wayne Clough, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Friday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m. Clough will be speaking on “New Perspectives at the Smithsonian.”

As the 12th secretary of the world’s largest museum and research complex, Clough has focused on expanding the Smithsonian’s global relevance and helping the nation shape the institution’s future through research, education and scientific discovery on major topics of the day.

Since he began his tenure, Clough has overseen several major openings at the Smithsonian, including the reopening of the National Museum of American History, the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins and the Sant Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History.

Before his appointment to the Smithsonian, he was president of the Georgia Institute of Technology for 14 years. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Georgia Tech in 1964 and 1965, and a doctorate in 1969 in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

In 2001, FIU and the Smithsonian Institution signed an unprecedented university-wide affiliation agreement that made many objects from the Smithsonian’s 140-million-piece collection available for study and display in Miami. The Frost is able to integrate Smithsonian collections into exhibitions, educational initiatives and research programs and also have access to Smithsonian staff expertise in areas of conservation, collections care and exhibition development.

The event, part of the Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.
