FIU to present four centuries of Cuban and Spanish music at “Classically Cuban” concert

WHAT: The Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University will present “Classically Cuban: Ida y Vuelta (Roundtrip),” a concert arranged by Cuban collector and independent scholar Emilio Cueto, featuring an anthology of songs and instrumental pieces, some composed by Spaniards and dedicated to Cuba, and others the work of Cuban musicians inspired by Spain.  Under the direction of FIU Professor Armando Tranquilino, who also will play the piano, an ensemble of FIU and University of Miami musicians will play the selections.

Cueto will introduce the concert, which will be divided in two parts, the first dedicated to Spanish composers and the second to Cuban composers.  The oldest piece to be interpreted will be “Tonadilla a 3 de la Habana,” anonymously written in 1763.  The repertoire also includes compositions from the 19th and 20th centuries, and will be brought to a close with the world premiere of “Espejos,” by Tranquilino.

A reception will follow the concert with cocktails.  The Consulate General of Spain in Miami and the Miami Consortium for Latin America and Caribbean Studies are co-sponsoring the event.

WHEN AND WHERE: The concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 S.W. 8th St., in west Miami-Dade.

Tickets cost $30 for adults; $25 for seniors and non-FIU or UM students; and $15 for faculty, employees and students at FIU or UM.  Free parking will be available in the Blue Garage, across the street from the Concert Hall and Lot 5, adjacent to the Concert Hall.
