FIU remembers Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Service was the focus of FIU’s 2011 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration. More than 3,000 people participated in the week of events, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services.

Motivational speaker and author Patricia Russell-McCloud spoke at the traditional MLK commemorative breakfast.

“Dr. King demonstrated fewness of words and greatness of deed,” said McCloud. “He asked the persistent question ‘What are you doing for others?’”

As part of the annual Panther Day of Service, hundreds of students and alumni volunteered at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, clearing foliage and landscaping.

The celebration concluded Jan. 19 at Biscayne Bay Campus with the MLK Youth Forum. Keynote speaker, CEO and bestselling author Ephren W. Taylor II, asked students to be the kind of person who leads by example. The Peace Walk held after Taylor’s lecture was cut short due to rain.

Check out highlights from the week’s events:

On view at the Frost Art Museum through Jan. 30 are the “MLK Legacy,” portraits that walk patrons through major events in King’s life that culminate into a short video presentation by assistant professor Jacek Kolasinski; “Wall of Hope,” the winning thematic essays written by high school students who have matriculated at FIU; and “Wall of Fame,” which highlights successful FIU Alumni of color.
