Softball kicks off season with doubleheader Feb. 11

Fresh off one of the most successful seasons in program history, Head Coach Beth Torina returns for her fourth season at the helm of the softball squad in 2011. The team looks to continue its winning ways this spring, building upon a phenomenal 2010 campaign in which the Panthers secured FIU softball’s second-ever NCAA Tournament bid.

FIU posted its first NCAA Tournament victory a season ago, picking up four NFCA All-Region nods and five All-Sun Belt Conference selections along the way. In addition, the Panthers completed a conference awards sweep, while Torina earned SBC Co-Coach of the Year accolades.

FIU returns 12 letterwinners, including six starters and two pitchers, from the 2010 squad. The Panthers will welcome six newcomers to this year’s team. Judging from FIU’s perfect fall ball record of 8-0, the Panthers are meshing well and are poised for yet another triumphant campaign.

“I think that the key to this year’s team is that we’re really well-rounded,” said Torina. “I think we have a really solid infield defense, I think we’re going to swing pretty well and we have some good options on the mound. We’re nice and balanced this year. I don’t think we’ll get too high or too low, as we’re not going to be solely dependent on offense or pitching or just one thing. I think we have a lot of things going for us.”
