Green$$ for Green

FIU is flipping the script! We’ve decided that going green means investing in you! The Sustainability Committee has a budget of $10,000 to help students fund environmentally friendly projects that will contribute to the visibility and culture of sustainability on campus.  That means it’s time for you to take that great idea you’ve been saving and put it into action.

Bike Repair Shop

Project funding is available to any FIU student, or group of students. This past academic year was the pilot for this funding. The new funding cycle begins July 1, 2011, for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 Semesters! Do you have a project idea? The Sustainability Committee is looking for more World’s Ahead sustainability project ideas. Check out the Student Sustainability Project Funding Page for more information!

Funded projects from this year’s Student Sustainability Funding program:

Nature Preserve

Every semester various Environmental Studies classes, and other professors, take their students to the Nature Preserve in order to learn about and work with our natural environment.  As acting manager of the Preserve, Mr. Vogel oversees theses classes and the volunteers that come and go into the preserve. Funding went toward the purchase of new tools for use in restoring this unique landscape by removing invasive species, clearing trails, and helping plant native flora.

Kill-A-Watt

Kill-A-Watt was a competition between the dorms on both BBC and MMC to reduce energy.  The premise was to create an initiative that would help the university reduce energy consumption, and in turn save money and better the environment.  Residents in each dorm competed against other buildings to reduce their electrical consumption by the greatest percentage. The savings were compared to a baseline average of that building’s energy consumption from previous years. I.D.E.A.S. sponsored workshops each week to show students how to reduce their energy consumption.  Prizes and incentives were given out to participants, and the winning dorm received a trophy and a pizza party.

Black Out Green On

Black Out Green On was an energy awareness party in the Housing Quad aimed at getting students to turn off their lights and electronics in their dorm rooms and come outside and enjoy free food, music, give-a-ways, and fun.

Bike Repair Shop

The FIU Bike Repair Service provides convenient, efficient and cost free maintenance for the FIU community, while promoting bicycling as a legitimate and clean form of transportation. By providing the aid and incentives necessary for students to commute carbon free, this service helps FIU move down the path toward a bike-friendly sustainable future.  The free Bike Repair Shop is available at the Farmer’s Market every Wednesday from Noon to 3pm at the Green Library Breezeway.

Powershift 2011

PowerShift is a conference designed to empower attendees with the tools and knowledge needed to become leaders in the environmental sustainability movement. The conference will be held in Washington D.C. held on April 15-18, 2011.  Panthers For PowerShift were approved funding for lodging for the trip.

FIU Earth Week

FIU Earth Week is held every year in the Spring. This year the Sustainability Committee is helping sponsor the activities and events through out the week. Student organizations put on events such as lectures, cleanups, movies, and more that all focus on educating the community on environmental issues. This year FIU Earth Week is April 4 – April 9.
