Serve the Preserve

Need volunteer hours? Like to work outdoors?

If you answered “yes” to either question, consider joining the hundreds of students who volunteer each semester at the FIU Nature Preserve.

A great educational resource at Modesto A. Maidique Campus, the 11-acre habitat mimicks natural South Florida landscapes. Volunteers help remove exotic and invasive plants, clear trails, plant native plants and put up educational signage. Along the way, volunteers learn about the preserve and the plants and animals living in it. Service days are set up every week and are open to everyone.

Nature Preserve

“The preserve is a living laboratory,” says Carrie Kasher, assistant director of the Office of University Sustainability. “Many days you can spot students identifying plant species, taking soil samples, or photographing or drawing its beauty.”

The FIU Nature Preserve is a great place to experience nature close to home. To learn more about the FIU Nature Preserve, set up a tour, or for more information on volunteering, visit the FIU Nature Preserve.
