Football receives 2010 SBC Championship rings at Spring Game

FIU fans got their first look at the 2011 football team April 2 at the Blue & Gold Spring Game. On the strength of a late touchdown catch by Glenn Coleman, the FIU offense defeated the defense, 19-10.

Alberto Padron ’98, MBA ’09, a die-hard FIU football fan and one of four alumni known as “The Four Horsemen” because of their unyielding support of the team since the beginning, was impressed by what he saw. “When I compare this season versus last: bigger, faster, stronger, better. We’re all excited about the upcoming season.”

After the game, the team was presented their 2010 Sun Belt Conference Championship rings. Quarterback Wesley Carroll said, “I know these guys are really excited to wear them and be seen with them out in public. It’s a great accomplishment for us, another stepping stone for us to move forward.”

Following the ring ceremony, players welcomed fans onto the field and signed autographs. “I know these are our true fans that have been here for the highs and the lows. And I’m glad they stuck around long enough to see us with a championship,” said linebacker Toronto Smith.

Also that day, FIU Athletics and alumnus David F. Alfonso announced the Panther’s home territory will now be called Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.

The 2011 FIU football season kicks off on September 1 when the Panthers host Sun Belt rival North Texas at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.com.
