Schriner named to top post at FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts

Brian Schriner, who started at Florida International University more than 20 years ago as a debate coach and visiting instructor, has been named Dean of the College of Architecture + The Arts.

Having previously served as the College’s interim dean, Schriner has held several administrative posts since arriving at FIU in 1990, including associate dean of academic affairs, director of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Speech Communication, chair of the Speech Communication Department, director of FIU Forensics Program, and the Director of Faculty for FIU’s Legal Studies Institute.

“Dean Schriner has done an outstanding job as Interim Dean of the College, leading the strategic planning effort in the College, nurturing an esprit de corps among the faculty, and re-engaging external supporters of the College,” said Executive Vice President and Provost Douglas Wartzok.

In addition to his administrative experience, Schriner is an award-winning educator. He is a past recipient of FIU’s prestigious Teaching Incentive Award, has been named Instructor of the Year, and has twice been named to FIU’s College of Business Administration’s Circle of Excellence for Teaching.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve as Dean of the College of Architecture + The Arts,” Schriner said. “I have the good fortune of working with the most talented, creative, caring, and dedicated group of faculty and students at the university.”

He added: “My top priorities are to increase student access and student services, expand our degree offerings, develop and strengthen collaborative, problem-solving, community partnerships, and revitalize the college’s financial base.”

Schriner is also an accomplished author, having published three communication textbooks. His most recent book is titled “Speaking Intelligently”. He has also authored numerous scholarly articles, student workbooks, and instructors’ manuals in the field of communication, and he currently sits on Houghton Mifflin’s Business Communication Editorial Review Board.

In addition to his academic experience, Schriner also has an extensive background in the private sector, specializing in organizational communication. He was a founding member of the Healthcare Mediation and Communication Institute, which specialized in medical mediation services and communication/conflict management training in the healthcare profession.
