Seminars to address changes to retirement system

Workshops will be held in English, Spanish and Creole beginning June 1 at MMC and BBC.

The 2011 Florida Legislature has passed retirement legislation and related bills that will affect the retirement programs of FIU faculty/staff beginning July 1. The bills have been presented to the governor, and it is expected that he will sign them into law.

When signed by the governor, among many other items, the retirement legislation will require employees in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) Pension and Investment Retirement plans and the State University System Optional Retirement Program to contribute 3 percent of their salary toward their retirement. The required 3 percent contribution does not apply to employees currently enrolled in the Deferred Retirement Option Program.

In June, the Division of Human Resources Benefits Administration Department will host several workshops at Modesto A. Maidique and Biscayne Bay campuses and offer detailed information regarding these changes, as well as other retirement-related changes and their anticipated impact on FIU faculty/staff.
