For some, preparing their tax return is a simple, albeit not enjoyable, exercise. For other people, help is sorely needed.
This past tax season once again, accounting students from FIU’s College of Business Administration helped low-income earners complete their tax forms. The students participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a free service established by the Internal Revenue Service in 1980.
Thirty-five students amassed more than 700 volunteer hours, completing a total of 231 returns at VITA locations in Sweetwater, Miami, West Miami and Corpus Christi.

750 hours? Impressive. That’s 20 hours per student. Not impressive, until I think back on my student days. Few volunteered at all, let alone 20 hours.
