FIU: A ‘Great College to Work For’

The Chronicle of Higher Education gives FIU top marks for workplace diversity

MIAMI (July 25, 2011) – Florida International University is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The results, released today in the Chronicle’s fourth annual report on “The Academic Workplace,” are based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities.

FIU, which won honors in the Diversity category, employs more than 8,200 faculty and staff members from 138 countries.

“We are thrilled with this recognition,” said FIU Board of Trustees Chair Albert Maury. “This honor is especially meaningful because it comes from our faculty and staff. This designation is not just an accident of being located in Miami. This award recognizes that we have created a culture around diversity, one that respects and fosters the contributions of each person.”

FIU is one of 111 that achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with FIU included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students.

“FIU is a great place because we work together to achieve our goals and we take care of each other,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “But what makes us really strong is that we value the diversity of our faculty and staff. At FIU we know that diverse points of view, together with dedication, hard work and innovation propel us to turn the impossible into the inevitable.”

The Chronicle is a leading source of news about colleges and universities in the nation.

“With the Great Colleges program, the Chronicle can provide even more of the vital information our readers rely on – unbiased reporting on which colleges are being innovative in their workplace practices,” said Chronicle Editor Jeffrey J. Selingo.

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, the Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.

Great Colleges to Work For is one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country.
