FIU shortstop Garrett Wittels signed with the St. Louis Cardinals July 2. Wittels will be reunited with former FIU teammate Jeremy Patton and start his professional career playing for the Batavia Muckdogs — the same team Patton is playing for right now.
Wittels finishes his FIU career hitting .352 with 7 HR and 116 RBI in three seasons. This past season, he hit .345 with 4 HR and 40 RBI, including a couple of 10th inning, game-winning home runs against No. 15 Stetson and Arkansas State at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Wittels put together a 56-game hitting streak in 2010 while hitting .412 and winning the Sun Belt Player of the Year Award.
