Rosa leads Puerto Rican National Team to win over Trinidad & Tobago


Former FIU volleyball star Yarimar Rosa and the Puerto Rican National Team continued play at the 2011 Pan Am Games over the weekend in Mexico, as Rosa led the squad to an important win over Trinidad & Tobago with a team-leading 11 attack points.

Puerto Rico, competing in Pool B, opened action at the Pan Am Games on Thursday, June 30, with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-21) win over Costa Rica. The team would then suffer a pair of set-backs with straight-set losses to the United States (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) and Brazil (25-21, 25-21, 25-10) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Behind Rosa, Puerto Rico put its record at 2-2 on the strength of a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Monday.

The United States and Brazil sit at the top of the Pool B standings, as each own perfect 4-0 records. Peru joins Puerto Rico with a 2-2 mark, while Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica are each 0-4.

The X Women’s Pan American Cup, a 12-team qualifier for next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix, opened on July 1 at two different venues in Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua, Mexico. The event will run through July 9 and the top four teams of NORCECA and the top two teams from South America, in addition to Brazil, will earn a spot in the 2012 World Grand Prix, the premier women’s annual volleyball competition.

Rosa was a four-time All-American outside hitter at FIU and she is currently a member of the professional team, Criollas de Caguas, in Puerto Rico. Former teammate and All-American setter Natalia Valentin is also a member of the Puerto Rican National Team, as she competes for Leonas de Ponce on a professional level in her home country.
