Tour new Faculty Group Practice Aug. 3

The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Faculty Group Practice (FGP) is moving to a new state-of-the art facility in PG5-Market Station at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

Faculty and staff are invited to tour the new facility during an open house Wednesday, Aug. 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Stay tuned to FIU News for a video tour in the upcoming weeks.

The FGP opened in 2009 as a place for the College of Medicine faculty physicians to provide faculty and staff with primary care, preventive care and specialty care, as well as management for chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

“This is quality clinical care in your own setting,” says Dr. Yolangel Hernandez Suarez, chief medical officer of the FIU HealthCare Network. “You don’t have to seek medical care outside of the FIU family. You know your physicians have been vetted though the university.”

The FGP is part of the FIU Healthcare Network (HCN), which oversees all the clinical affairs of the university.

Dr. Fernando Valverde, chief executive officer of FIU HCN, says the vision is to provide a world-class center for faculty and staff. During a visit from Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon July 14, Valverde said, “Lao Tzu, the ancient Chinese philosopher, wrote, ‘A journey of a 1,000 miles begins with a single step.’ Today you see our first step.”

The new, 6,100-square-foot location, set to open Monday, August 8, will house 10 state-of-the-art patient examination rooms. Physicians will be able to access patient records from the exam rooms, which are all ADA compliant. The FGP will also offer expanded medical services, including radiology and laboratory testing.

“This is intended to be a medical home for faculty and staff and so the services we are starting with are really those anchor primary care services that we all know are the right way to seek care,” says Dr. Hernandez Suarez.

The FGP accepts all insurance plans offered through FIU. Standard copayments will apply.

Once the FGP opens in its new location, hours will be extended to:

Monday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Tuesdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wednesday 8 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Thursdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
