Aug. 23: Hurricane Irene update

This university advisory was posted at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23:

The FIU Emergency Management Group continues to monitor Hurricane Irene, which is expected to bring severe weather to South Florida by Thursday. At this time, all university operations are taking place as scheduled.

Every member of the university community is urged to stay alert to news media updates regarding Hurricane Irene, which may be a category four hurricane when it comes near South Florida. Because hurricane-track forecasting is not an exact science, everyone must be prepared. If you have not yet done so, please finalize your plans and secure any supplies you might need, such as food, water and medications.

In the hours before a hurricane approaches, resident students are encouraged to go home or stay with a friend’s family locally. Please make any such plans now. Faculty and staff should review office emergency plans and have supplies on hand to cover or secure equipment that may be vulnerable to the weather.

We will keep you updated as conditions change.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with FIU’s redundant emergency communication system so that you may stay informed before, during and after any emergency that affects our campuses.
