Hurricane forecast models are in agreement that Hurricane Irene will stay offshore as it passes Florida. Due to this information, at this time all university operations are taking place as scheduled. We will keep you updated should conditions change.
While the hurricane will likely not have a direct impact on South Florida, it is still possible that the area will experience bad weather and possible strong gusts of wind. It is important that every member of the university community remain alert and prepared as storms can change course unexpectedly.
It is important to remember that this is now the most active part of the hurricane season. Please continue to monitor weather forecasts on a regular basis.
FIU has a robust emergency communication system to help members of the university community stay informed before, during and after any emergency that affects our campuses. Please be familiar with this communication plan.
Good morning, today is August 25 and this page has not been updated for the latest news on Irene. I live in Broward County and the wind gusts have increased with heavy rain at times. I am finding this weather somewhat danger to drive to south campus, but since I have not seen an update about cancelling classes I will take my chances. Irene has shifted a little west this morning. Thanks
The page needs to be updated, business as in Southland Mall stores have been closing, the weather conditions are expected to increase in severity. Will the night classes be held; it is highly likely that power will be lost. No one should be expected to stay and have to commute in the current weather, let alone in the mask of dusk.
Currently Wind gust in Miami 50mph and Hurricane Advisory in affect for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward County
