To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the September 11attacks, Florida International University will hold a month-long series of events that will include lectures, multi-denominational prayers, art exhibits, and musical performances.

Unity/Diversity: Reflecting on the Meaning of 9/11 will bring the FIU community together to pay homage to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 as well as reflect on the event’s multiple impacts over the past decade.

“We have worked hard to organize events that reflect this solemn occasion and remind our entire community of the terrible loss and the incredible lessons from that day,” said Hilary Landorf, director of the Office of Global Learning Initiatives. “As a global community, FIU is the perfect place to reflect, commemorate and come together as an international family committed to peace and learning.”

A Teach-In, hosted by the School of International and Public Affairs, will be held on Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. in the Graham Center Ballrooms on the Modesto Maidique Campus. Experts from a variety of fields will discuss the events of September 11 and the decade since.

Throughout that day, FIU students, faculty, staff, and alumni will gather with community leaders, including Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, to honor victims, survivors and the nation’s first responders and armed forces. Gimenez will participate in a 12:15 p.m. “Commemoration & Reflection” ceremony at the steps of Primera Casa.

Other ceremonies that day will include performances by the FIU School of Music’s Marching Band and Choir, a wreath presentation at the Peace Monument, and multi-denominational readings and prayers.

In addition, from Aug. 29 – Sept. 11, Italian-born multimedia artist Arianna Caroli’s photos of the American flag in the diverse cultural contexts of New York City and Miami are being displayed on digital monitors throughout the university.

These events are free and open to the public. They will be held on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW 8 Street in Southwest Miami-Dade County.
