FIU launches iPhone Mobile app

The FIU Mobile app is now live for iPhone, giving students, faculty and staff access to a wide array of university services from anywhere. The Android and BlackBerry apps will be coming soon as well.

You can use it to see what’s happening on campus, find a book or article in the library, check class schedules and financial aid, enroll in courses, watch FIU videos, connect to FIU Facebook, Twitter and iTunes, read the latest news and much more.

“Our focus with this app was to give people on the move an easy way to interact with FIU whenever they need to and wherever they are,” said Web Communications director Matt Herzberger. “We included lots of features that should be useful for students, faculty and staff.”

Here are the features of the new app:

Athletics: Follow FIU sports news, schedules and scores for your favorite Roary teams with the athletics app.

Courses: Browse and search courses for current and future terms, see course descriptions, times, locations and availability, and even contact the instructor directly from within the app.

Events: Find and keep track of a wide range of FIU activities, from concerts and art exhibits to lectures and athletics. Browse events by name, subject, date or location.

Emergency: Quickly access phone numbers for campus police.

FIU on iTunes U: Stream or download audio and video recordings including course and faculty lectures as well as campus performances on iTunes U.

Get Help: Get access to important numbers and information when you need them. Call to report an emergency or get information from the FIU Emergency Information Hotline.

Learn: Get instant access to all of your Blackboard Learn™ course content on the go. Check grades, post to discussion forums, view important class announcements, read and download assignments, upload content and more.

Library: Easily find library resources including location and call number, and even see current availability.

Maps: Search campus buildings by name, pinpoint them on the map and see their location relative to your own.

MY FIU: Enroll in courses. Make changes (add/drop) to your schedule. View your class schedule and details. View your grades for any semester. See all charges, due dates, financial aid awards, acceptance and disbursement dates. Faculty can see their teaching schedules and rosters.

News: Keep up with all the happenings on and off campus with news from a variety of sources including content from news.FIU.edu.

Videos: Access all of FIU’s video content in one easy-to-view place.

This project was a collaboration between Web Communications, PantherSoft and FIU Online. The team leveraged the Blackboard Mobile platform, which ties into many of the Enterprise systems that are used by most universities, including PeopleSoft, Blackboard, Moodle, iTunes U, YouTube and Google Maps.

Coming soon will be the native app for Android and Blackberry. Soon to follow will be more more updates on the mobile site m.FIU.edu in collaboration with the PantherSoft team.
