The One Card is the official FIU on-campus identification card, the only card you will need on campus. FIU students, faculty and staff can use the card as an ATM/debit card around town or on campus to shop, travel, dine and access free events.
On the back of the new card, there are two magnetic stripes. The blue stripe is coded with your Panther ID and is for the FIU Cash Account, a prepaid debit account that can only be spent on campus. The black stripe gives you access to a linked Wells Fargo checking account that you can use around town or anywhere in the nation that accepts PIN-based debit transactions.
FIU Cash Account:
There are four easy methods to add funds to your FIU Cash Account:
- By Credit Card — Staring Aug. 22, make online deposits using a credit card by logging on to shop.fiu.edu/onecard.
- At a ValuePort – Deposit cash into any of our 11 ValuePorts located throughout all our campuses for your convenience. A map with all our locations can be found here.
- In Person — Make cash deposits to your FIU Cash Account at the FIU One Card Office at your respective campus. Please note that the cashiers cannot accept credit cards.
- Mail Your Check — Checks and money orders must be in U.S. dollars, drawn on a U.S. bank and must be made payable to FIU. They must include your Panther ID number. Post-dated checks are not accepted.
The FIU Debit Account can be used at laundry facilities, on-campus restaurants, computer labs, the Fresh Food Company, the library, on-campus retail venues, Barnes & Noble at FIU and the Recreation Center, among other establishments. Each time you use your FIU Cash Account at a point of sale, your remaining balance will appear at the register.
All students are required to carry a new FIU One Card. To switch out for the new card, bring your old PantherCARD to the new FIU One Card office in PG 100 at Modesto A. Maidique Campus or WUC 143 at Biscayne Bay Campus and get your picture taken. If you are a new student, bring your class schedule for the current semester and a government issued photo ID (driver’s license, military ID or passport).
The first One Card is free. There is a replacement charge of $15 if the original card is lost, stolen or damaged.
There is no fee or interest charged on your FIU Cash Account. However, there is a service fee for online deposits made with a credit card. There is also a withdrawal fee for students or employees who would like to withdraw funds from their account prior to graduation or termination of employment. The FIU One Card Cash account is intended for on-campus purchases, not cash withdrawals.
Wells Fargo Debit Account:
You can link your FIU One Card to a Wells Fargo account to take advantage of using your card on and off campus. A Wells Fargo College Checking account offers students many benefits including:
- Monthly service fee waived when linked to your FIU One Card
- Direct deposit available for your financial aid and/or paycheck
- Around-the-clock account access with Wells Fargo Online® Banking
- Banking on the go with Wells Fargo Mobile® Banking2
- Free access to cash at three Wells Fargo ATMs on campus and 12,000 ATMs nationwide
There is a full Wells Fargo branch at MMC in PG1 (formerly known as the Gold Garage) next to the new FIU One Card office where you can link your card and conveniently manage all your banking needs right on campus.
If you have any questions regarding the FIU One Card, call 305-FIU-CARD (305-348-2273) or e-mail onecard@fiu.edu. For any Wells Fargo banking services questions, call 305-228-4285.
Thanks for the update on this. If I may, though, I’d like to ask a few additional questions:
1. Will current employees be required, at some point, to switch to the FIU One Card, or is this optional?
2. Will the 14-digit FIU Library Number appear on the back of this card, as it does on the current Panther ID? If so, will this library number change? If not, how will new students know their library number?
3. Will electronic locks on campus keyed to an employee’s current Panther ID automatically work with the new FIU One Card, or must key card access be reprogrammed? And, if so, what is the procedure (do we take the FIU One Card to the keybank)?
Thank you for your great questions. Please see my response below:
1. All faculty/staff and students will be required to replace their PantherCARD with a FIU One Card. We want to ensure that our employees take advantage of all the additional services provided through the new One Card. There will be an extensive re-carding effort targeting Faculty & Staff this Fall semester. A mobile unit will be made available to re-card employees easily and conveniently across various locations on campus. There will be further communications coming soon.
2. Yes, the 14-digit FIU Library number appears on the back of the FIU One Card as it does one the PantherCARD. The library barcode number changes upon issuance of a new card, however, your library services will not be affected by the change. The library will automatically receive files daily with the updated information.
3. Yes, the electronic locks on campus keyed to an employee’s Panther ID number will continue to work with the FIU One Card without having to reprogram the card or go to Key Control. All FIU access and services will remain the same and the transition will be seamless.
Thanks so much for the very clear and thorough reply!
Is the card a visa or mastercard? if you open a Wells Fargo checking account and link it to the FIU One Card will you still receive a debit card?
Great questions! The FIU One Card is not a visa or mastercard. The One Card is strictly an ATM/debit card that may only be used with pin-based transactions. However, if you open a Wells Fargo checking account and link your One Card you may also receive a Wells Fargo Visa Check Card. Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you.
So we are in essence being forced to market Wells Fargo, and probably, into opening an account with them.
Not exactly…FIU has partnered with Wells Fargo to provide a service to our students, faculty and staff. Wells Fargo is providing great benefits for our students through their banking services, however, it is not mandatory to link the FIU One Card to a Wells Fargo checking account. We are simply trying to make the One Card as convenient for our students as possible. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you.
I don’t like the fact Wells Fargo has its logo in each and every ID issued by FIU. I believe it is a marketing strategy targeting the student population at FIU. Students will get used to Wells Fargo and keep banking with them long after the students graduate. I believe we should not be influenced by Wells Fargo or any other bank. If we misplace the card, we have to pay 15 dollars to replace the ID card and Wells Fargo contributes zero towards those fees. We, on the other hand, will be advertising for them every time we use our ID card even if we are not affiliated with Wells Fargo.
Does it matter if we don’t have an account with Wells Fargo? Can the FIU One Card be left without linking it to a Wells Fargo Account?
I need to add money to my FIU Cash Account online but the “link is broken”?
