Juan Guerra ’09 joins Venezuelan National Team


Former FIU men’s soccer star Juan Guerra ’09 (2005-’08) will play in his second international friendly match with the Venezuelan National Team Wednesday, Aug. 10, as Venezuela takes on Honduras at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Recently added to his country’s national team, Guerra earned his first cap playing all 90 minutes against El Salvador Aug. 7 in a 2-1 loss at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The defensive midfielder is on loan currently to Las Palmas (La Liga Division II of Spanish football) from Caracas FC. After his career at FIU, Guerra went on to play for FC Dallas of Major League Soccer and served as the captain of Monagas SC. He earned Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2008.

The FIU men’s soccer team kicks off its 2011 season Friday, Aug. 26, against Nova Southeastern University. Match time is 7 p.m. at FIU Soccer Stadium.
