Meet your champion football team at Panther Preview Aug. 12

The FIU community is invited to get a taste of the 2011 football season with Head Coach Mario Cristobal at the Panther Preview Friday, Aug. 12.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Stadium Club with free food, drinks and prizes. Cristobal will be on-hand to talk about the upcoming season, when the Panthers will look to defend their Sun Belt Conference title and win a second bowl game.

Afterward, the team will take to the field for an open practice. Guests can select their season ticket seats and then get an autograph from their favorite FIU players.

The pressure is on this season as the team comes off its best season in its history. The Panthers have been selected to repeat at the Sun Belt Conference champions in the preseason coaches’ poll and the Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook.

Six of the 2011 games will be nationally televised, starting with the home opener vs. North Texas at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1.

The team starts the fall season on a high note, with Cristobal’s new five-year contract extension through 2016. Cristobal, the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, has led the turnaround of the Panthers during his four years at FIU.

“FIU is a special place and the ongoing support from the entire Panther community is overwhelming,” Cristobal said. “This is a university on the rise and to be a part of that is an honor and a privilege. We will continue to work tirelessly to establish a program that FIU and the entire South Florida community can be proud of. This is an exciting time for FIU football.”

Cristobal led the Panthers to their first-ever conference championship and went on to defeat Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl last December. The bowl victory was the final accomplishment in a season filled with firsts for the Panthers. The football program earned its first-ever victory against conference rival Troy, as well as a thrilling, 31-24, victory over Arkansas State during a four-game winning streak in which they claimed the Sun Belt Conference title.

FIU football season tickets start as low as $42. For more information, call 305-FIU-GAME.
