FIU to celebrate Faculty Convocation Sept. 21-22

The university will hold its annual Faculty Convocation Sept. 21-22, and organizers have a message for FIU students and staff: We hope you’ll join us.

“There is a perception that Faculty Convocation is only for FIU faculty, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” says Sumit Kundu, professor of international business and chair of the Faculty Convocation Committee. “It’s a university celebration that is meant to be all inclusive. This is a family event.”

Everyone is invited to two events: the annual Faculty Convocation Concert and the Faculty Convocation and Awards Ceremony and Reception.

The concert will take place Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. School of Music faculty and student ensembles will showcase “Musica Iberoamericana” with music by some of the finest composers from Spain and Latin America. A wine and cheese social at the Wertheim Rotunda will immediately follow the concert.

The awards ceremony will take place Thursday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Fifteen members of the faculty will be honored for their achievements, and the winner of the President’s Council Worlds Ahead Faculty Award will be announced. This award recognizes sustained excellence in teaching, research and service. The keynote address will be given by FIU alumnus Carlos Migoya, president of Jackson Health System. The title of his speech is “Beyond Sustainability: How Research and Education Can Transform a Healthcare System in a Global Community.” A question-and-answer session will follow his remarks.
