Homecoming Panthermonium continues Saturday with parade, game

Homecoming week comes to a close this weekend with the annual parade, crowning of royalty and the football game against Duke University. The entire FIU community is invited to Modesto A. Maidique Campus Saturday, Oct. 1, to celebrate Panther traditions. The theme this year is “If Roary Ran the Circus…”.

Here’s your Saturday itinerary:

Food trucks

A number of food trucks will be on campus for the first time, starting at 1 p.m., serving delicious meals until game time.

So stop on by. The trucks will be parked curbside on the south side of Campus Drive, from the far west side running along Lot 6 onward. (The only interruption in service may come around the time of the Homecoming Parade.)

Homecoming parade

The Homecoming parade starts at 2 p.m. at the Ryder Business Building loop and ends at FIU Stadium. Come watch as organizations showcase their banners, cars, and floats, led by the FIU Grand Marshall David F. Alfonso, Dazzlers, and cheerleaders.

There will be cheer zones at the 16th Street traffic circle and at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum.

Homecoming game

This year’s Homecoming showdown looks to be the best one yet: the Panthers vs. the Blue Devils of Duke. Game time is 7 p.m. at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.

The Panthers, 3-1, are experiencing their best season ever, opening with convincing wins over North Texas, Louisville and University of Central Florida (UCF). For the first time in the program’s history, the team is receiving votes in the AP Top 25 poll.

Senior wide receiver T.Y. Hilton remains a Heisman hopeful, despite seeing limited action in the UCF and Louisiana games due to a hamstring injury.

After losing the first two games of the season to Richmond and Stanford, Duke has won two straight against Boston College and Tulane.

At half-time, the Homecoming Court will crown the king and queen for 2011.

Students get in free with their FIU OneCard. For all others, click here to purchase tickets. Wear your blue FIU gear to show your support and spirit at the game.
