Lupe Fiasco concert Sunday kicks off Homecoming Week

FIU’s jam-packed Homecoming Week is filled with concerts, performances and reunions, all leading up to the Saturday, Oct. 1, football game against Duke University.

“It’s going to be the biggest, baddest and best Homecoming FIU has ever seen,” said Homecoming Council Director Mercy Lavado. “It is going to be a year of a lot of firsts.”

Among the first: A concert on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium to kick off the week of events. For tickets to the 7 p.m. Lupe Fiasco and Tinie Tempah show visit hc.fiu.edu.

Also, there has been close collaboration between Modesto A. Maidique and Biscayne Bay campuses both are involved in Homecoming events. Buses will be available to make sure students can attend the major events at MMC, including Sunday’s concert, Monday’s comedy show with the Wayan Brothers and the National Panhellenic Council Step Show on Tuesday.

“You really have everyone on board,” Lavado said. “It’s a more university-wide Homecoming effort, so there’s something for everyone.”

Monday at noon, the official Homecoming pep rally for students will be held on the GC lawn and the BBC Panther Square. Both will have free pizza and smoothies and Homecoming T-shirt giveaways.

Throughout the week FIU will host reunions for a variety of alumni groups, including Greeks, Young Alumni and Student Ambassadors. Alumni can register online for all alumni reunions. On Homecoming Day, the FIU Alumni Association will host the Silver Pride Reunion for graduates of 1986 and earlier. The event is sold out.

Homecoming day on Saturday starts with a parade at 2 p.m. and continues with the Panther Pit Alumni Association Tailgate Village from 3 p.m. until the 7 o’clock kickoff. FIU football takes on Duke University. For a preview of the match-up, click here.
