The following Letter to the Editor from FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg appeared in The Miami Herald Friday, Sept. 2:
UM IS AN ANCHOR
Florida International University is proud of its relationship with the University of Miami. As anchor institutions in our community, we work together to enhance education, which is the key to prosperity for our region.
Our academic collaborations have expanded educational opportunities for our students and our community. Together, we also are tackling some of our community’s most critical issues, such as healthcare and the environment.
It’s unfortunate that recent news reports and speculation surrounding UM’s sports programs threaten to cloud UM’s academic achievements. President Donna Shalala has raised academic standards at the university, spearheaded a record-breaking fundraising campaign, developed UM into a formidable economic force in South Florida and made it one of the top universities in the nation.
Our community is better thanks to the contributions of President Shalala and the University of Miami. We look forward to many years of working together in benefit of our community.

Very nice gesture from President Rosenberg. A real treat to see cross-town “rivals” joining together in affirmation of the huge positive impact both schools are to South Florida, my home town. Our politicians should be so magnanimous.
