T.Y. Hilton named Walter Camp National Player of the Week

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Bowl Championship Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending Sept. 10. Panther senior wide receiver T.Y. Hilton captured the honors for Offensive Player of the Week after his spectacular performance Sept. 9 against Louisville. FIU won the game, 24-17. The Panthers are now 2-0 at the start of the season for the first time in the history of the program.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: 
T.Y. HILTON, FIU 
Senior, Wide Receiver, Miami, FL/Miami Springs
 FIU senior wide receiver T.Y. Hilton recorded a school-record 201 receiving yards and added two touchdown receptions (74 and 83 yards) as the Panthers defeated Louisville, 24-17. Hilton had seven receptions and finished with 268 all-purpose yards. It was FIU’s first-ever victory over a BCS automatic qualifier opponent.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: 
MELVIN INGRAM, SOUTH CAROLINA 
Senior, Defensive End, Hamlet, NC/Richmond County 
South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram had an all-around game as the Gamecocks held off SEC-rival Georgia, 45-42. Ingram recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, and took a direct snap (off a fake punt) and ran 68 yards for a score. He added one tackle and secured the victory when he recovered an onside kick.

About the Award: This is the eighth year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Bowl Championship Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation (www.waltercamp.org) – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. The Foundation is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA).
