Florida Grand Opera and FIU School of Music unite for Oct. 15 concert

FIU’s School of Music has joined forces with Florida Grand Opera (FGO) to present “An Evening of Dramatic Opera Scenes” on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m., at the Herbert & Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature performances by members of the FIU Opera Theater and FGO’s Young Artists Studio.

FIU's Opera Ensemble includes (not pictured in order): John Cabrali, Shanna Nolan Gundry, Michelle Kemp, Vindhya Khare, Rebecca Longtemps, Evelyn Saavedra, Katherine Smith and Scott Tripp.

The singers have been rehearsing together at FGO’s Doral Center for weeks. They’ve put together a program that will include highlights from FGO’s current season, as well as selections from some of the world’s most beloved operas, such as the romantic zarzuela Luisa Fernanda and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.

A part of the Division of Vocal Studies, the FIU Opera Theater, led by professor Robert Dundas, is the premier vocal ensemble at the university. It is comprised of graduate voice performance majors, as well as select undergraduate voice students.

Founded in 1984, FGO’s Young Artist Studio has gained worldwide recognition as one of the leading operatic training programs in the nation and its 2011-’12 program is comprised of nine artists selected from more than 600 applicants.
