Last Time Out

FIU picked up a pair of Sun Belt Conference victories this weekend as the Panthers defeated Arkansas State (3-2) and UALR (3-0) in the friendly confines of the U.S. Century Bank Arena. FIU is now 60-11 at home since Head Coach Danijela Tomic took the reigns of the FIU volleyball program in 2005. In addition, the Panthers’ win over the Red Wolves improved FIU’s record to 25-7 in five-set contests under Tomic and also marked the seventh-year head coach’s 150th-career victory.

Junior Jovana Bjelica had a stellar offensive weekend, recording 51 kills against just 11 errors in 97 total attempts across eight sets of action, good for a hitting percentage of .412 and a kills-per-set mark of 6.38. Redshirt freshman Jessica Egan also had an outstanding weekend as she led the Panthers with 100 assists for an assists-per-set mark of 12.50. Freshman Silvia Carli led the FIU blocking corps with 15 blocks for the weekend, good for a blocks-per-set mark of 1.88, while junior Chanel Araujo recorded team-highs of five service aces (0.62 saps) and 38 digs (4.75 dps).

A Look at Florida Atlantic

The Owls are in the midst of a nine-match losing skid as Florida Atlantic owns an overall record of 3-18 and is winless in Sun Belt Conference play with a mark of 0-9. Georgia Robinson leads the Owl offense with 166 kills (2.31 kps) while Madison Lang has recorded a squad-best 405 assists (6.75 aps). Thacilli Pereira and Grace Vega are tied for the team lead in service aces with 16 apiece, and Cintia Nightingale owns a team-high 209 digs (3.03 dps). Chandler Hatton leads the Owl blocking corps with 15 solo stops and 50 block assists for a total of 64 blocks (0.90 bps).

Series History: Florida Atlantic owns a 24-20 advantage in the Division I series with FIU, however, the Panthers have won the last 11 matches against the Owls. Earlier this season, FIU came away with a 3-0 victory on Oct. 7 in Boca Raton, Fla.
