Visiting FIU

Ana Lourdes Ardon, the vice consul of Honduras in Miami, welcomed 45 agroecology students from Universidad Nacional de Agricultura (UNA) in Catacamas, Honduras, to FIU Oct. 17. The students were visiting FIU to learn more about agricultural practices through lectures and hands-on training.

The students were hosted by the university’s agroecology program and project directors Krish Jayachandran and Mahadev Bhat.  Students were also welcomed and greeted by College of Arts and Sciences Dean Ken Furton, Vice-President for Engagement Divina Grossman and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education Hilarion “Lari” Martinez.

Students visited local farms, the FIU Library, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, UF-Tropical Research and Education Center,  the U.S. Department of Agriculture Sub-Tropical Horticultural Research Station and the Applied Research Center, where former assistant secretary for Environmental Management at the U.S. Department of Energy Secretary, Ines Triay, helped students to tour their facility .

This is the second visit from UNA students to FIU. The program is made possible thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
