Dear students, faculty and staff:
Last week, I visited Tallahassee to make a presentation to the House Education Committee on a variety of issues, including diversity, STEM degrees, and the future needs of our institution.
When asked a question by House Committee Chairman Rep. William L. Proctor regarding the issue of tuition in Florida’s State University System, here is what I answered: “I can’t tell you that I’m enthusiastic about raising tuition to the national average in the next three years because that would have a significant impact upon students who matter to me. I’m not convinced that the financial aid would be there to reduce the difficulty and the pain.”
Some of you may have read today’s Beacon story about that trip. Unfortunately, the Beacon erroneously indicated that I enthusiastically supported increasing tuition. To listen to my full presentation to the House Education Committee, please click here. To hear my thoughts on tuition increase, fast forward to time index 94:10.
On Wednesday, January 25, we will travel to the state capitol again as we celebrate FIU Day and show how unique our institution is. As in years past, we will update you regularly between now and the end of the legislative session. If at any time you want to learn more about developments in Tallahassee, I invite you to visit our Governmental Relations page. If you have questions about this topic, please don’t hesitate to write to me at presmail@fiu.edu.

Doesn’t each school get to decide how much of that 8% increase they will use a year? Haven’t we consistently used all of it? If so, was the article erroneous or were your comments disingenuous?
President Rosenberg’s comments on tuition increase contradict with his allegations that ‘students matter to him’ and ‘students first’. President Obama proposal in State of the Union to cut Federal aid on states that increase tuition is the right program. I believe that his proposal would help and protect students of these outrageous and disappointing tuition increases.
