Graduate Success Initiatives helps students, advisors stay connected

FIU has launched the Graduation Success Initiative (GSI), an extensive set of innovations dedicated to helping FIU’s undergraduate students succeed academically. Students and advisors will have a variety of tools at their disposal to ensure each student finds their academic home as early as possible with a clear path to success. The new approach will help students explore new majors, stay on track and ultimately graduate on time.

The Graduation Success Initiative complements the recent changes in registration that will allow students to plan further in advance their course of study by registering for both summer and fall semesters at once.

MyMajorMatch

Upon admission to the university, undergraduate degree-seeking students will be invited to take MyMajorMatch, a tool that matches your interest with FIU majors, giving students an opportunity to explore career paths they might have never considered. MyMajorMatch can be found at MyFIU located under “Admissions” for new undergraduate applicants or “Academics” for currently enrolled undergraduate students.

MyMajor

MyMajor provides in-depth information on all FIU undergraduate majors, including the admissions criteria, related occupations and the departments’ contact information. Students can choose from two-year transfer and four-year freshman Major Maps; these semester-by-semester road maps help students successfully navigate each major. Discover new majors at mymajor.fiu.edu.

Panther Degree Audit (PDA)

Students and advisors can now assess degree completion with Panther Degree Audit (PDA). The automated degree audit monitors your progress, keeps track of what requirements have been fulfilled and what requirements have yet to be completed. PDA is available at MyFIU.

My_eAdvisor

If a student registers for a course that was not in his or her original course of study, My_eAdvisor will issue alerts to both students and advisors suggesting the student is off track. My_eAdvisor will also allow students to plan their courses, schedule meetings with their academic advisor and include a record of advising notes that both students and advisor can view at any time. My_eAdvisor will be available in Fall 2012.

A significant number of academic advisors are being hired each year to achieve the 300:1 advisor-to-student ratio that defines best practice nationally. GSI is introducing tools that will allow advisors to reach out to students proactively with guidance.
