FIU emergency communication

President Mark B. Rosenberg sent the following message to the university community May 30:

As we prepare to enter the 2012 hurricane season, I urge the entire university community to take time now to review and update personal hurricane plans and become familiar with FIU’s plans.  Your plan should include a disaster preparedness kit as well as a communication plan so members of your family will know how to contact one another.  You should be familiar with your neighborhood and know whether you live in an evacuation zone.

As a member of the university community you also have a responsibility to familiarize yourself with FIU’s emergency communication plan and be an active participant in your own safety by staying alert to messages from university and local emergency managers.

Although the focus is on hurricanes at this time of year, it is important for you to know that FIU plans for all types of emergencies that may affect the university community. An important part of that plan is our redundant communication systems. Depending on the situation, some or all of these communication vehicles may be activated:

Faculty and staff should also take a moment to become familiar with your department’s Continuity of Operations Plan now. As soon as possible after an emergency, you should establish contact with your colleagues and supervisor. These simple steps will make for a safer season and a quicker recovery. The University has taken steps to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff and I urge you to take this opportunity to do the same.

This year we have created an informational poster you can download, post and reference as you make your preparations for the season. Please share it with your friends and family. Additional information and useful preparedness links can be found at http://dem.fiu.edu/

Sincerely,

Mark B. Rosenberg
