Innovative hospitality education program graduates first class, changes students’ lives

Almost 100 family and friends were on hand to watch the graduation of the first cohort of students in DIAGEO and FIU’s Learning Skills for Life program on Aug. 7 at the Kovens Conference Center at Biscayne Bay Campus.

The partnership between the premium drinks company and the university placed 50 underserved community members in a pilot eight-week certification program taught at the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. There, these students acquired the skills they will need to thrive in job opportunities within the hospitality and tourism industries.

In addition, the members of the cohort received guidance and tips to help them boost their self-confidence, not only professionally but also personally.

Flower Davis, 27, says she’s always been passionate about the industry, but that employers traditionally have limited her to front-desk work.

“People can you put in a box and not challenge you,” she said. “I’ve learned that there’s so much more I can do and have to offer. Everything now is an opportunity.”

Learning Skills for Life is currently operating 59 programs in more than 32 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, and has impacted the lives of almost 64,00 participants throughout the region. The Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is the official academic partner for its South Florida initiative.
