Homecoming Week 2012 kicks off Sunday, Oct. 7, with a day-long concert lineup featuring headliners Cobra Starship, B.o.B. and Kaskade.
The day begins at 1 p.m. with the free Panthermonium Village at Tamiami Park. Two stages will be set up for performances by BonJourney, Casely, 21 Pilots and more. The village will feature food vendors and serve as the opening acts for the evening concert. No tickets are needed.
At 5:30 p.m. the fun shifts to FIU Stadium for the Panthermonium Concert featuring Cobra Starship, B.o.B. and Kaskade. Tickets for the Panthermonium Concert are $35 and went on sale Aug. 7. Free tickets are available to students, faculty, alumni and staff with an FIU ID. For more information on when and where to get your free tickets visit hc.fiu.edu.
“What we were thinking was bringing high energy acts to the university,” said FIU senior Freddy Juarez, chair of Homecoming. “We were looking at having all the music genres represented so there’s something for everyone.”
The bands were chosen after the Homecoming Council surveyed students on what type of music they’d like to have at Homecoming. The top choices were electronic, hip-hop and pop, Juarez said, so that guided their selection of the main acts. They diversified the lineup by adding 80s tribute band BonJourney and 21 Pilots, with its distinctive piano-driven rock/rap sound.
A battle of the bands will take place in the Concert Village to select a band to open for the three main acts.
“The way we envision it is a day where we unite everyone,” Juarez said. “We want everyone there. At the village, everyone comes out and gets pumped for the concert. It sets the tone for Homecoming Week leading into the Middle Tennessee game. We are one university. That’s the message we want to get out there.”
