FIU is gearing up to host the third annual American Heart Association’s Miami-Dade Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Modesto A. Maidique Campus, and all we’re missing to make this the best walk yet is you.
The morning of the 5K will kick off bright and early at 8 o’clock with some words from FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg and the walk’s organizers including 2012 Heart Walk co-chair Ernie Diaz from TD Bank, a fun zone for younger participants, warm-ups and a light breakfast.
Then, more than 12,000 participants will begin walking (and running) to raise awareness of the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of men and women in the United States – cardiovascular disease and stroke.
There is no donation or fee requirement to participate in the walk. The first 500 participants to register as part of an FIU team (FIU students, faculty/staff and family) will receive a free “Team FIU” T-shirt.
Twenty-four FIU teams have signed up to support the American Heart Association so far. To create an FIU team or join an existing one, click here.
What time does the event end?
Hi, Jodi-Ann: That depends on how fast you walk. 😉 If you walk at a brisk pace, you could be finished in 35 minutes. If you walk at a more leisurely pace, you will likely finish in 45-50 minutes or later. Hope to see you out there!
Oooh so its a short event. Is the goal of the event to meet people in the South Miami area to educate them about cardiovascular disease and stroke? I am interested in the event but I’m not a part of any of the clubs that already have teams. Could I still join one of the club groups even if I’m not in that club? I’m in the honors college, but they don’t have a team. So, could I create my own team for the honors college if I can get more people from the honors college to get involved?
We love your enthusiasm, Jodi-Ann! We’ll find out for you and get back to you as soon as we have an answer.
Okay, Lori-Ann, we have answers! You can create a team for the Honors College. There is no minimum amount of team members required to create a team. When you go in to register, you’ll actually see the Honors College listed; directly to the right of the name you’ll see the link, “Create a Team.” You can click on that link and do it that way. Hope you register and have a great time!
I see that the goal for the Honors college team is $200. So, would my team have to raise that $200 before the event on Saturday? Or is it ok if we only raise some of it from now and then try to raise the rest of money on Saturday?
Hi, Jodi-Ann: I’m told that when you see the $200 goal, you can delete that and put in a goal of $0. The organizers said that the goal is to get people out there to increase awareness of and promote education of heart disease. You and your friends do NOT need to raise money to participate!
