Mark your calendars: 2012 Faculty Convocation and Awards events

FIU will hold its annual Faculty Convocation events on Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 to recognize the collective contributions of our faculty in the areas of teaching, research, service, engagement, librarianship, mentorship and advising.

FIU Board of Trustees Chairman Albert E. Dotson Sr., FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg, Professor W. Kinzy Jones, FIU President’s Council Chairman Morris I. Hollander, FIU Faculty Senate Chairman Thomas Breslin, FIU Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Douglas Wartzok (at podium)

The Faculty Convocation Awards Ceremony and Reception are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Twenty four members of the faculty will be honored for their achievements. The winner of the President’s Council Worlds Ahead Faculty Award will also be announced at the event. This award recognizes sustained excellence in all three areas of teaching, research and service.

The keynote speaker at the ceremony will be Ira Harkavy, founding director of Netter Center for Community Partnerships, University of Pennsylvania. His address, titled “University-Community Engagement, Advancing Knowledge, and Realizing America’s Democratic Promise in the 21st Century,” will offer specific insights into FIU’s rich potential for meaningful community engagement activities. Harkavy will also lead a workshop and roundtable discussions the following day, organized by the Office of Engagement.

The annual Faculty Convocation Concert is scheduled as a matinee for Friday, Sept. 28 from 3 to 5:00 p.m., and performed by FIU School of Music faculty and student ensembles. This year’s concert will showcase music from eastern Europe. A wine and cheese social at the Wertheim Rotunda will immediately follow the concert.

Robert Dundas, associate professor of music, director of Vocal Studies and founder/director of the Opera Theater, has assumed the responsibilities as chair of the Faculty Convocation Committee. Under his leadership the committee will continue to plan and carry out these celebratory events and further cultivate faculty traditions.
