A sukkah in Sweetwater

To mark the week-long Jewish Festival of Sukkot, which began on Sept. 30, the ChabadFIU student group erected a traditional sukkah on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. The tent-like structure is a reminder of the type of dwellings in which the Israelites lived during their 40 years in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt.

FIU students passing by were universally clueless about the sukkah’s purpose, with most unable to even venture a guess. (One suggested it was a photo booth.) Given a bit of information, senior Jesenia Diego said, “I’m not Jewish, but it’s interesting because it’s a different culture.”
